Wet Sanding
Why does a boat need wet sanded? Many people do not know that once gel coat has so much oxidation, buffing is only a temporary (and not guaranteed) fix. In order to get your vessel back to having a nice rich color, the top layer of gel coat needs to be removed. This is where wet sanding comes into play.
Wet sanding removes the thin layer of gel coat that is oxidized or “chalky” looking. Once through the oxidation, it reveals the clean gel coat your vessel had when it was new. After wet sanding, the boat is buffed, polished and waxed to preserve the color. Silver Tree Marine recommends having the vessel buffed every year after to prevent future oxidation from happening. Below are before and after pictures of a Cobalt we recently wet sanded. As you can see, it looks like a completely different boat!
Note: Decal removal is highly recommended prior to wet sanding. If possible, new decals can be ordered to replace the existing decals after wet sanding.
